The staircase is often the trickiest design decision in a loft conversion — it has to meet building regulations, fit into your existing floor plan without eating into a bedroom below, and still feel like a natural part of the house.
UK building regulations set minimum requirements for headroom, going (depth of each step), rise (height of each step), and handrails. We handle all of this as part of your fixed-price plans package, so you don't need to navigate the regulations yourself.
- Directly above the existing staircase — usually the simplest and most space-efficient option, keeping the layout logical.
- Over a landing or into a bedroom — sometimes necessary depending on the house layout; we'll show you the trade-offs during design.
- Straight flight — simplest, most space-efficient for headroom.
- Winder/quarter-turn — useful where a straight run won't fit; needs slightly more careful planning for regulations.
- Space-saver stairs — an option for very tight spaces, though less comfortable for everyday use — we'll only recommend this if it genuinely suits your household.
